How do you know if a pet is being mistreated?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell if a pet is being mistreated, but there are clear signs you can look for. A mistreated animal may show physical signs such as wounds, infections, untreated injuries, or extreme thinness from lack of food. Their fur might be dirty, matted, or full of parasites, and they may limp or struggle to walk. Behavioral signs can also reveal mistreatment — pets that are constantly fearful, flinch when touched, refuse to play, or show aggression may be suffering from abuse or neglect. Another strong indicator is the living environment: animals left without food or clean water, chained or caged all the time, exposed to harsh weather without shelter, or kept in filthy, cramped spaces are not being cared for properly. In severe cases, pets may be abandoned on the streets or used in illegal breeding setups.

If you notice these signs, trust your instincts. Document what you see if it is safe to do so, and report the case to local authorities, SPCA, or through our Report Cruelty page. Speaking up can save an innocent life, because every animal deserves compassion, care, and dignity.
